MOps-Apalooza

Takeaways from MOps-Apalooza 2024 (+ My Slides)

Just like last year, MOps-Apalooza 2024 was an incredible conference of useful sessions and networking. Someone described this conference as “where your internet friends become your real life friends,” and it continues to be amazing to meet face-to-face with fellow professionals that I’ve known and respected for years. If you work in MOps and can only attend one conference, pick this one.

Takeaways from MOps-Apalooza 2024

This year, I was lucky enough to be joined by my colleagues Jen Senwoo and Kelsey Duarte (Jen even came with me to go bouldering!), and their thoughts are reflected here as well.

Doing more with less

There were several sessions around this topic from scaling with a “small but mighty” team (Chloe Pott) to effectively choosing technology and measuring its effectiveness (Andrew Dimmick, AJ Sedlak). The technology budget isn’t flowing quite as freely as it once was, and making smart investments in people and technology that directly lead to business impact remains more critical than ever. A few variations of “begin with the end in mind” kept coming up, but it’s also important to remember you don’t have to get there all at once. Just start somewhere. Even small changes can have a big impact.

AI isn’t going anywhere

I wasn’t able to attend Jeff Canada‘s standing room only session on AI in Marketing Operations, but it is #1 on my list to watch the recording of. Scott Brinker also dedicated a large portion of his closing keynote to discussing the impact that AI will have on the entire go-to-market function. I personally have started using AI as a starter place to speed up my development. I can generally describe what I want to do and instantly generate some starter code. The possibilities are endless, and it will be interesting to see which use-cases emerge in the marketplace.

Community wins

As you’d expect from a community-led conference, this event really nails the people part. There were several moments where I just immediately felt like I was surrounded by “my” people. There’s a good mix of new pros just getting into the game and seasoned veterans all mingling and sharing their knowledge and experience with one another. There are deliberately scheduled breaks in between sessions to network, visit the expo hall (not pitchy! actually fun and helpful!), or just grab some caffeine and mentally prepare for the next session. No one person can know everything, and I love that the whole community comes together to share their expertise in a way that’s tangible and not vague execu-speak. Never stop learning.

My Session Resources

You can also check out the recording of my session on “A Smarter Way to B2B Funnel Tracking,” where I discussed using a custom object to track the funnel. Unfortunately, the first few minutes (including some of my best jokes 😭) were cut off from the official live recording, so you can check out another version here: A Smarter Way to B2B Funnel Tracking

And you can download a copy of my slides from MOps-Apalooza 2024 here.

See you all next year!
